Dating from the XII century and situated in a commanding position overlooking the Valle del Tevere in Umbria, Italy, the core structure was originally used as a monastery and has undergone many changes as each new generation adapted the structure to meet their needs. Working together with Marco Battaggia, we organized the design based on a series of strong visual axis to reinforce a sense of the property’s expansiveness and the grandeur of the surrounding countryside. Large masses of mediterranean and drought-tolerant plant species were utilized to reinforce the connection with the surrounding landscape –essentially blurring the lines between garden and the spectacular wilderness that surrounds the estate.
